How to use
- Choose the art category that matches the work — abstract, landscape, portrait, modern, classical, surreal, minimalist, expressionist, impressionist or sculpture.
- Optionally type what the work is actually about — sea, my grandmother, the city at night. Leave it blank and the category supplies its own subjects.
- Press Generate Names. Ten names appear; press it again for a fresh ten, and nothing repeats until you reset.
- Star the ones worth keeping. They collect in the Saved list below the results.

About this tool
A title is the only part of a painting made of words, and it does more work than its size suggests. It tells a viewer where to stand: whether to look for a place, a person, a feeling, or nothing at all beyond the paint. Wheatfield with Crows asks you to find the crows. Composition VIII tells you, firmly, not to look for anything. Both are instructions, and both were chosen.
Most artists stall at the title because they are trying to invent one from nothing. It is easier to work inside a tradition. There are really only three in wide use, and once you can name them you can choose deliberately instead of guessing — an afternoon spent reading how the most famous paintings in history were titled teaches the patterns faster than any rule could.
-
The descriptive title of the seventeenth century
A View of Delft from the South, with the Rotterdam Gate
Dutch and Flemish pictures were named the way an inventory is written: what is shown, where, and from which side. The title was a caption for a buyer who had not yet seen the canvas. It promises nothing about meaning, and it never goes out of date.
-
The Impressionist place-and-time title
Rouen Cathedral, the Façade in Sunlight
Once painters started chasing light rather than subjects, the hour became part of the subject. Monet titled by place plus condition — morning, fog, snow effect — because the same motif at a different hour was a genuinely different painting. This is still the most useful convention for anyone working from observation.
-
Abstract numbering and Untitled
Untitled (Black on Grey), No. 7
When the picture is not of anything, a descriptive title would lie. Numbering keeps the sequence legible without imposing a reading; the parenthetical, when there is one, admits the minimum — a colour, a place, a date — so the registrar has something to write down.
However you arrive at a title, test it twice. Say it out loud, as though you were introducing the work to a stranger standing in front of it — anything that sounds like a poem read at a wedding will sound worse on a wall label. Then search it in quotation marks, because a title already carried by a famous painting will follow yours around forever. What survives both tests is the title.
FAQ
Can I use a generated title for my own work?
Yes. The titles are combinations of ordinary words assembled in your browser, and short phrases like these are not protected by copyright. Before you commit, search the exact title in quotation marks to make sure a well-known work is not already using it.
How do I know which title is the right one?
Say it out loud as if you were introducing the work to someone standing in front of it. A title that feels theatrical when spoken will feel worse on a wall label. Then search it, then leave it alone for a day. The one still standing on the second day is usually the one.
Is it acceptable to call a work Untitled?
It is, and it says something specific: that the picture should be met without instructions. The common compromise is Untitled with a parenthetical clue, as in Untitled (Harbour, Late Autumn), which keeps the openness while still giving a catalogue something to file.
Does the title matter for selling or listing work online?
It matters more than most artists expect. A title carrying a real subject and place is what people actually type into a search box, and it is what a gallery catalogue line needs alongside the date, medium and dimensions. Abstract numbering reads well in a gallery and badly in a search result.
Can I get the same list of titles back later?
Yes. Every batch is produced from the seed shown under the results. Write it down, and later type the same seed with the same subject, medium, mood and style settings to regenerate the identical batch. Shuffle simply replaces the seed with a new random one.
