    How to use

    1. Set how much of each paint goes into the pile — drag the slider or type into the field next to it. Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, French Ultramarine and Ivory Black are on the palette to start.
    2. Switch the unit between %, mL and fl oz. A full pile — 100% — is 5 mL, so the same recipe reads as proportions or as an amount to squeeze out.
    3. Read Mixed Result: the swatch, the total amount, the volume in both milliliters and fluid ounces, then CMYK, HEX, RGB and an approximate Pantone code, with a breakdown of every paint in the pile.
    4. Optional: turn on Realistic pigment mixing to swap the average for a subtractive model, and use Add another paint to bring any of 24 studio pigments into the mix.
    5. Optional: switch to Match a color to go the other way — paste a hex and get the closest pigment recipes.

    About this tool

    This is a mixing calculator first. You say how much of each paint goes onto the palette, and it gives you back the proportions, the volume and the color written out in the codes a studio actually uses. Amounts are held as a share of one full pile: 100% is the whole pile and one whole pile is 5 mL, which is roughly what comes out of a 37 ml tube in six squeezes. Switch the unit and every field converts with it — 50% becomes 2.50 mL becomes 0.169 fl oz for the total — so the same recipe works as a ratio when you are mixing on a palette and as a measurement when you are batching a color for a large canvas and need it to come out the same tomorrow.

    The default mix is the amount-weighted average of the paints you set, and it is deliberately simple: it is the arithmetic of the recipe itself, so half white and half red is exactly halfway between them, and doubling everything changes the volume without touching the color. That predictability is the point of a calculator. The readouts follow from it — HEX and RGB straight from the mixed value, CMYK derived from those, and a Pantone-shaped code that is an approximation of the hex rather than a licensed ink, which is why it says approx. on the label.

    Real paint is less obedient, and that is what the Realistic pigment mixing switch is for. A screen makes color by adding light; pigment does the opposite, absorbing part of the spectrum and scattering back only what every particle in the pile failed to absorb. Average Cadmium Yellow and Ultramarine on screen and you get a dull olive; mix them in oil and you get a green, because yellow eats the blue end, blue eats the red end, and the green band survives them both. The switch models that with a single-constant Kubelka–Munk approximation on linear RGB — an approximation, not a spectral simulation, so use it to decide which two tubes to reach for and mix a test patch before you commit a large passage.

    The other thing a palette teaches is bias. No pigment is a pure primary: Ultramarine leans red, Phthalo Blue leans green, Cadmium Red Light leans orange, Alizarin Crimson leans violet. Mix two that lean away from each other and between them they absorb nearly the whole spectrum, which is what mud actually is. Which is the argument for a limited palette — six or seven tubes, one warm and one cool version of each primary, mixed constantly and compared against the subject. It is the discipline behind every studio copy of an old master, and most of what actually happens when an oil painting reproduction is made by hand. Adding a twentieth tube rarely fixes a color problem; working out which two you already own are fighting each other usually does.

    How do the units convert?

    The mixer works in parts of a hundred: 100% is one full pile, and one full pile is 5 mL, or 0.169 fl oz. So 1% is 0.05 mL, 50% is 2.50 mL, and the Volume readout always shows the same total in both milliliters and fluid ounces. Switching the unit never changes the mix, only the numbers you read and type.

    Why is the default mix an average of the colors rather than real paint behavior?

    Because the default view is a proportion calculator, and its job is to be predictable: the mixed swatch is the amount-weighted average of the paints you set, which is the arithmetic of the recipe itself. It is the same arithmetic the original Oil Paint Mixer used. If you want the way pigment actually behaves in linseed oil, switch on Realistic pigment mixing (Kubelka–Munk) underneath the sliders.

    Why do yellow and blue make green in realistic mode but grey by default?

    Screens emit light and add it together, so averaging yellow and blue lands on a dull neutral. Paint does the opposite: each pigment absorbs part of the spectrum and what reaches your eye is only what both pigments failed to absorb. Yellow absorbs blue and violet, blue absorbs red and orange, and the narrow band they both leave alone is green. The realistic switch models that absorption with a Kubelka–Munk approximation instead of averaging the two swatches.

    Is the Pantone number a real Pantone color?

    No, and that is why it is labeled Pantone (approx.). It is the mix's hex value written in the shape of a Pantone code, exactly as the original tool produced it, so it can be pasted into a note or a brief as a reference. Matching a genuine Pantone ink needs the licensed color books, not a screen.

    How accurate are these colors?

    Close enough to plan a palette, not close enough to skip the palette knife. The paint swatches are sRGB approximations of masstone, every brand differs, and the realistic model uses one constant per channel instead of a full spectral curve. Treat the output as a direction to move in and mix a real test patch before committing a large passage.

    Can it find a recipe for a color taken from a photograph?

    Yes. Sample the color you want in any image editor, paste the hex into the Match a color tab, and the tool searches every two- and three-pigment combination at whole-number parts from one to five, ranking the results by ΔE in Lab space. It returns the three closest recipes with the parts written out.
